Bintou's Braids
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (October, 2001)
Authors: Sylviane A. Diouf and Shane W. Evans
Average review score:

very enjoyable
my daughter (age 4) enjoys having this book read to her. I think it makes her feel proud of the braids she wears in her hair (which Bintou wants so desperately). Plus it's interesting because it takes place in Africa. And Bintou's pride in her own hair in the end is wonderful too. A great book.

Black Kingdoms Black Peoples
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (April, 1982)
Authors: Antnony Atmore and Stacey Gillian
Average review score:

exposing the true Africa
The book was written by a European scholar which happnes to understand the pulse of Africa and it's people. The book explores the rich cultural heritage that Western Africa has. The book is great because it avoids the biased of most europeans when they are looking at Africa. The book also mentions that connection of the ashanti to that of ancient Egypt. The book takes you from the ancient kingdom of Benin to the great tooboktu.

Chevron and Nueva Cadiz Beads (Beads from the West African Trade, Volume VII)
Published in Hardcover by Picard African Imports (December, 1993)
Authors: Ruth Picard and John Picard
Average review score:

The Quentessential Chevron Reference
As a collector of venetian chevrons and trade beads for a little over 15 years, I find that this book, like all of their books (7 in all), is the best published reference material about chevrons yet. There is not one other book that comes close to having the amount of information or pictures that this book possesses. A MUST for any beginning collector; a very important tool to help you from becoming prey to the many frauds that have recently infiltrated the hobby. All you serious bead traders should already have these books.

Excellent reference
If your interested in west African Cichlids this book is a must. Includes detailed pictures of Pelvicachromis, Nanochromis, and many more species, with both male and female identified. Also includes short description of species habitat and water parameters. This book makes identification easy.

Decentralization and Reform in Africa
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (July, 2002)
Author: Sylvain Hounkponou Boko
Average review score:

A Critique of a Compelling and Extraordinary Book
The ways in which Dr. Boko analyzed the economical developments in many West African countries was outstanding. He was able to convey a detailed and well organized examination of the impact of the fiscal decentralization on subnational resource mobilization capacity and macroeconomic stability.

Usually economic books are extremely dense and quite frankly "hard reads" but Decentralization and Reform in Africa was not. Indeed it was thought-provoking and complex, but Boko seemed to relate ideas and recommendations in an understandably unique fashion.

In the end, it was quite simply a great read. I look forward to future works by this author.

The Dogon of West Africa (Celebrating the Peoples and Civilizations of Africa)
Published in Library Binding by Powerkids Pr (January, 2003)
Author: Christine Cornell
Average review score:

A Children's Book
Beware that this is not a serious study of the Dogon people intended for adult readers. It is a (rather nice) children's book.

Dogon: Africa's People of the Cliffs
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (May, 2001)
Authors: Stephenie Hollyman, Walter E. A. Van Beek, and W. E. A. Van Beek
Average review score:

Good pictures and very good texts
The book is very good. Make a jorney in one of the Africa most interesting tribe. You will enjoy it. Good for those who have never been among dogons and even for those who have been there. You will find a lot of interesting information. Some pictures are not excellent but anyway I would recommend this book. It is very deep.

Drum Gahu!: A Systematic Method for an African Percussion Piece
Published in Paperback by White Cliffs Media Co (October, 1987)
Author: David. Locke
Average review score:

For both the player and the scholar
Drum Gahu is another marvel produced by the leader of Ewe drumming in this country, David Locke. Locke systematicly takes the reader through the patterns, playing techniques, and descriptions of each instrument; the bell, the rattle, kagan, kidi, sogo, and the master drum. In addition, he provides the reader with execises for the playing of these instruments. The text is easy to read, but the musical notation is a bit small. I highly recommend buying the Drum Gahu tapes that are available. The tapes are of Locke performing most of the musical examples in the book. It also has an excerpt of Gahu being performed in Africa; the real thing! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about Ewe drumming, and to anyone interested in learning to play Gahu.

Drum Gahu: An Introduction to African Rhythm
Published in Paperback by White Cliffs Media Co (September, 1998)
Author: David Locke
Average review score:

worth the effort
This is a patient but tremendously technical introduction to a very complex musical tradition. The author studied with and quotes several fine and well-known Ghanaian drummers; the text is overwhelmed with detailed and difficult musical examples (performed on the enclosed CD). With time and effort, the lessons can form the foundation for a very rewarding African drumming experience.
